Caffeine Calculator: How Much Caffeine Is in Your Drink?

Here’s a question most of us never actually answer: how much caffeine did you really have today? That morning latte, the mid-afternoon cold brew, the cola with lunch — they add up fast, and almost nobody does the math.

So we built this caffeine calculator to do it for you. Pick your drink, pick the size, tap in how many you’ve had, and it shows your total caffeine in milligrams — plus how that stacks up against the widely cited 400 mg daily guideline for healthy adults.

Pick your drink, size, and how many — see your caffeine total instantly.

Please note: caffeine values are typical averages — actual amounts vary by brand, brew method, and serving. The 400 mg/day figure is a widely cited general guideline for healthy adults, not medical advice. Individual tolerance varies — check with your doctor if unsure.

How to Use It

It takes about ten seconds:

  1. Choose your drink — espresso, brewed coffee, cold brew, latte, tea, energy drinks, cola, and more, each with its typical caffeine content shown.
  2. Pick a size — small, regular, or large adjusts the total proportionally.
  3. Add how many — had two lattes? Tap the plus button.

That's it. The gauge fills up as your total climbs, and you'll get a plain-English read on where you stand — plus a fun comparison, like how many espresso shots your day adds up to.

What's the 400 mg Guideline?

You've probably seen this number before: up to 400 milligrams of caffeine per day is the amount most health authorities cite as generally fine for healthy adults. That's roughly four 8-ounce cups of brewed coffee.

A few honest caveats, because they matter:

  • It's a general guideline, not a personal prescription. Sensitivity varies a lot from person to person — some people feel wired after one cup, others can drink espresso at midnight and sleep fine.
  • It doesn't apply to everyone equally. If you're pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or managing a health condition, talk to your doctor about what's right for you.
  • The calculator shows typical averages. A real coffee shop latte can swing quite a bit depending on the beans, the shot size, and who's pulling it.

General information only, not medical advice. Individual tolerance varies — check with your doctor if unsure.

How Much Caffeine Is Actually in Common Drinks?

If you'd rather eyeball it, here are the typical numbers our calculator is built on:

  • Espresso (1 oz shot): ~63 mg
  • Brewed coffee (8 oz): ~95 mg
  • Cold brew (12 oz): ~150 mg
  • Latte or cappuccino (12 oz): ~125 mg
  • Black tea (8 oz): ~47 mg
  • Green tea (8 oz): ~28 mg
  • Energy drink (8.4 oz can): ~80 mg
  • Cola (12 oz): ~34 mg
  • Decaf coffee (8 oz): ~7 mg (yes, decaf still has a little)

The sneaky one is cold brew — it tastes smooth and mellow, so people drink it fast, but a large one can carry more caffeine than two espressos. And "just one more cup" at 4 p.m. is the classic way a reasonable morning turns into a jittery evening.

Why Bother Tracking It?

Mostly, it's about sleep. Caffeine has a half-life of around 5–6 hours for most people, which means that 3 p.m. coffee is still half-hanging around at 9 p.m. If you fall asleep fine but wake up groggy, afternoon caffeine is a pretty common culprit.

The other reason is simply knowing your own pattern. Plenty of people discover they're having 500+ mg without realizing it — not because any single drink was extreme, but because three or four moderate ones stacked up. Seeing the total spelled out makes it easier to decide whether that next cup is worth it.

The Bottom Line

You don't need to quit caffeine or count every milligram like calories. But knowing roughly where you land takes ten seconds with the calculator above — and it's genuinely useful information to have.

Try it with yesterday's drinks. You might be surprised.
